Learning Disorder一Dyslexia

As many as 20% ofall children in the United States suffer from some form of the learningdisorder

called dyslexia.

Experts on dyslexiasay that the problem is not a disease.They say that persons with dyslexia useinfor-

ination in a di价rent way.One of the world's greatthinkers and scientists Albert Einstein was dyslexic.Ein-

stein said that henever thought in words the way that most people do.He said that he thought inpictures in-

stead.The Americaninventor Thomas Edisoii was also dyslexic.Dyslexia first was recognized in Europe and

the United Statesmore than 80 years ago.Many years passed before doctors discovered that personswith the

disorder were notmentally slow or disabled.The doctors found that the brains of persons withdyslexia are

different,In mostpeople,the left side of the brain一the part that controls language一is largerthan the right

side.In persons withdyslexia,the right side of the brain is bigger. Doctors are not sure whatcauses this

difference.However,researchhas shown that dyslexia is more common in males than in females,and it is

found more often inpersons who are left-handed.No one knows the cause of dyslexia,but somescientists

believe that it mayresult from chemical changes in a baby's body long before it is born.They aretrying to

find ways to teachpersons with dyslexia. Dyslexic persons think differently and need specialkinds of teaching

help.After they havesolved their problems with language,they often show themselves to be especiallyintelligent

or creative.One out of fiveAmerican children suffers from dyslexia.
