Over five millionchildren die each year from disease,infections and accidentsrelated______(51)their environment although many of these deaths are largelypreventable,says

the World HealthOrganization.

On Monday,the WHOasked governments and citizens around the world to take action to cre-atehealthy______(52)for children as it celebrated World Health Day.

“The biggestthreats to children's health lurk in the very______( 53)that should besafest-home,school and community,” said Dr. Gro HarlemBrundtland,director-general of

the WHO at the day'slaunch in New Delhi,India.

The futuredevelopment of our children-and their world-depends on______(55)enjoying goodhealth now.We have their future in our______(56).Now we must work more

This year'stheme,“Healthy Environments for Children”focuses on the many dangers______(58)by children in and around the places where they live and play.

These includeinadequate access to safe drinking______(59)and sanitation,insect- bornediseases,air pollution,chemical hazards and injuries from traffic,falls,burnsand

drownings.

Communities aroundthe world organized events to promote awareness of children's healthis-sues,______(60)included drawing contests for schoolchildren in Vietnam,street

plays inIn-dia,puppet shows in Namibiaand professional lectures for policy makers in Germany and else-where.

Activities alsotook______(61)in cities across Canadaon Monday,including Calgary, Montreal,Halifax and Ottawa.

Although childrenunder five represent only 10 per cent of the world's population,they bear 40per cent of the global disease______(62),says the WHO.And as much as one-

third of the totalburden of disease may be caused by environmental______(63).
